Opta Scores With New iPhone App

01st August 2009

Football fans worldwide are getting live match action at their fingertips as the result of a new venture from Opta.

The success of Football 10 has already been demonstrated by its place at the top of the download charts.

Now, even so soon after the launch of the service, there are plans to expand it to offer more football content as well as data from other sports.

Football 10 is available to iPhone users as a paid-for or free download and is the result of a partnership between Opta and the French developer Netco Sports.

“Netco Sports were already developing applications for iPhone but they wanted to move to the next level,” said David Collet, Opta’s Sales Manager for France.

“They looked at what was available from various providers and they identified Opta as the best partner to supply the content they were looking for.”

Football 10 was launched in time for the new football season in Europe. It covers more than 52 football competitions worldwide and is available in seven languages in more than 80 countries.

Users can access news, fixtures and results, match preview data and live match updates. The paid-for version offers additional features including live text commentary.

Competitions covered by the service include the Premier League, the top leagues in Spain, Italy, France and Germany and the major UEFA tournaments – the Champions League and the Europa League.

Plans for the future will see an increase in the number of competitions covered by Football 10, the introduction of a dedicated club service and expansion to cover other sports.

“The idea is to select the leading clubs in each country and provide fans with a dedicated application for their team that delivers news, fixtures, results, full live data and text commentary,” said David.

“There is even an images section so fans can upload photos taken with their phone into the database. They can capture every element of their football day.

“We are delighted with the success of Football 10 so far. It has been one of the top 10 downloads since it was launched and Netco Sports have more projects for us to work on including rugby and cricket.”
